The Fratellis
1. Flathead
2. Henrietta
3. Chelsea Dagger
One of the better bands to fly the flag of the post-punk revival brigade, this Scottish outfit are one of the bands to watch out for this year, having already been named Best Breakthrough Act at the BRIT Awards. This is the sort of music that gets people dancing in the streets, homes and iPod ads. Seems like the British Isles are absolutely smashingly teeming with splendid acts from nu-rave to garage punk, a fact I'm sure is not lost on the esteemed and learned followers of indieisthenewpop. cheerio4. *
my paper electronic heart will bleed
Electronic music has come a long way since its introduction in 1898. Yes I kid you not, the first electromagnetic thingamajig was used alongside orchestras and the like. However they were often cumbersome and hence inconvenient to use. The great-grandfather of modern synthesizers could look like this:
While the wonders of modern technology have evolved into something a little more familiar:
Lamb - Gorecki
Presenting another electronic dynamic duo, this time hailing from England. Their blend of trip-hop with drum & bass turns out to be pretty good ear candy indeed. Get this ready for the car stereo, the moody soundscape interspersed with laid back beats and backed with the signature lo-fi sound, the listener gets wrapped up and taken on a musical trip; hence the term trip-hop.
Propellerheads - Spybreak!
This track should be familiar to most, it was the musical backing for the orchestra of gunplay and acrobatics in the elevator lobby shootout scene from The Matrix. If it sounds somewhere in between Fatboy Slim aka Norman Cook and acts like Crystal Method and The Chemical Brothers, you ain't far off the mark. This type of electronica is generally christened 'Big Beat' and characterised with intense basslines and pulsating beats that bop along pretty quick.
Portishead - Sour Times
Another trip-hop number, another English band, another great song.
Philip Oakey & Giorgio Moroder - Together In Electric Dreams
More than 2 decades old this song may be, but it serves as the bonus track for today. Don't laugh, we have it on good knowledge that most of you secretly sing along to this in the shower or when you think no one's looking. Enjoy.

the next band I don't care whether you have heard of ; you'd better listen to them now
Arctic Monkeys
1. The View From The Afternoon
2. I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor
3. When The Sun Goes Down
Having decided to continue with the post-punk garage sound theme, it took awhile to find a band to top the previous one. Having said that, the results have been extremely satisfactory. The Arctic Monkeys, aside from having the coolest band name ever, make music that is just pure unadulterated 100% raw satisfaction. I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor was their breakout hit in 2005, and When The Sun Goes Down continues in the same vein. Watch this space, more will come in future from these guys.

the next band you might not have heard of
Kaiser Chiefs
1. I Predict A Riot
2. Na Na Na Na Na
3. Modern Way
Kaiser may mean "Emperor" in German, but what this band has in common with their name is perhaps a little less obvious. But give them a listen and you might be itching to proclaim them as the heir apparent to all the great punk and new wave acts that ever graced the scene. Sounding a little like The Strokes, The Killers (pre-Sam's Town), The Vines, and many other bands with a 'The-' prefix, you really can't go wrong with the Chiefs. Enjoy

hot off the presses
Word is out that Fall Out Boy is releasing a live CD/DVD due out on April 8. Besides being loaded with a large selection of their choice hits, the set packs a punch in the form of covers of songs by Akon, Timbaland & Michael Jackson. Whether you like FOB or not, whether you mosh along or can't stand them, take that animosity and Beat It into submission. Fresh from the airwaves and into your ipod. Enjoy.
more bands you haven't heard of
Relient K
1. Be My Escape (Acoustic)
2. Must Have Done Something Right
3. The Best Thing
You might have heard of this American pop-punk band before, but they've been off the radar for awhile. Here at indieisthenewpop we feel duty-bound to continue to provide good service to the masses, to take a listen and go grab their album, Five Score and Seven Years Ago, if you can. The latter 2 tracks above are from that disc, with The Best Thing said to be the antithesis of Daniel Powter's Bad Day, i.e. the song is brimming with positive vibes. That would be pretty handy on a wet dreary day like this.
Mae
1. Summertime
2. Soundtrack For Our Movie
3. Sometimes I Can't Make It Alone
It might be of interest to know that Mae is an acronym for Multi-sensory Aesthetic Experience, which I interpret to be a mumbo-jumborish term for good music. True to their name though, their songs exhibit a varied and rich soundscape , way more intriguing than your run-of-the-mill rock outfit.

spring in the air
Today signals the start of spring. A time of renewal, for the harshness of yesteryear to fall aside and be replenished through the splendid flourishes of nature once again. Or so they say. I see no let up in the damp weather or the scorching hot spells in between. So seek refuge in these mellow tunes as they soothe your body and soul. Let indieisthenewpop herald a new spring of good music into your living rooms, bedrooms, washrooms, wherever. Most of the artists have been featured here before, and for good reason. enjoy.

indie is not indian
On today's menu, we serve up a veritable feast. Indulge in garage-ska-punk-post-grunge-emo-revival-other-meaningless-label -nonsense below.
Alley Life - Out With The Old (In With The New)
Been bumping this track for the better part of a decade already, ever since it was featured on the seminal soundtrack of THPS2. Beware, its contagious.
The Zutons - Oh Stacey (Look What You've Done)
Don't really know what to say about this group, they sorta defy labelling and grouping. Take a listen and you'll get what I mean. I can tell you though that they hail from Liverpool and oh wait I've found a label for them. "Psychedelic cartoon punk". Hope that's more helpful to you than it was for me..
SR-71 - Right Now
I went around thinking this song was titled "Kick Me When I'm High" for the longest time until someone enlightened me on the true title. Regardless, this track still possesses one of the meanest drum/guitar combos to ever rock your head to. Don't sleep on this.
Hot Hot Heat - Goodnight, Goodnight
This 80s influenced outfit is instantly catchy. No explanation needed. They're so good I'm throwing in another song right here. You Owe Me An IOU
Thea Gilmore - Razor Valentine
Now this song is positively dripping with emo-ness. Or should I say negatively with emotion. Whatever. Its something that you might hear over the end credits of some poignant movie. Would be good for Romeo & Juliet I must say..

the next bands you've never heard of
The Weekend
1. There Goes My Heart
2. Kick Myself
3. 80s Rockstar
This Canadian outfit started out with a heavy synthesizer sound but now they sound much more radio friendly with lyrics in your face and wicked hooks in the melody. They even toured in Indonesia not too long ago. With luck they might swing by the region again
Chromeo
1. Needy Girl
2. Tendoroni
3. Fancy Footwork
Who said that Arabs and Jews don't get along, this electro duo do it just fine, making ingenious beats with a funk influence. Expect to hear them in your friendly neighbourhood chillout spots. Set to open for the Beastie Boys on tour, these guys are on the way up.

killing me softly with covers
Covers are everywhere. They keep you warm at night, and protect all the cops operating under covert operations. They are reimaginations of classic hits, given a new twist and refreshed for the modern age. Either that, or every now and then a band runs low on originality and decides to rehash an old song instead. Either way it still makes for some good music.
The Bird & The Bee - How Deep Is Your Love (Bee Gees Cover)
We begin with another track from TB&TB. Somehow covers where the singer is of a different gender from the original often sound better. They impart a certain quality to the song which was lacking in the original; letting you see your old favourites in new light. "how deep is your love, cos we're living in a world of fools" some lines like these really just stand the test of time so well.
Embrace - How Come (D12 Cover)
What do you get if you take a lil rap, mix in some piano and strings and add one emo-sounding vocalist? You get a melodic rendition like this, which would please fans of both genres. After the bridge when you get the crescendo of drums and guitar accompanying the vocals, you can only but marvel at this successful fusion of rock themes with urban material.
Keane - With Or Without You (U2 Cover)
Another English rock band, another piano laden cover. The alternative sound that they pioneered is was pretty ahead of its time, with layers upon layers of synth, brought to the front of the audio soundscape due to their lack of a guitar as the lead instrument. The vocals here may not rival that of Bono, but its enough of a change to warrant a listen. Or two, or three and so on..
Ben Folds Five - Bitches Ain't Shit (Dr Dre Cover)
What do you get if you take a lil rap, mix in some piano and strings and add one emo-sounding vocalist? You get a melodic rendition like th- Oh shit thats the same verse, I just did this. But then this song is along the same lines as the Embrace cover above, save for the fact that a bunch of nerdy white guys going on about stuff that has nothing to do with them even remotely is pretty amusing.
The Vines - Ms. Jackson
Now this one's a little different. The rap verses were stripped from the original, leaving only the bridge and chorus. But the result ain't bad at all. It retains the heartfelt tone of the original and actually seems more suited to the emo cooing and ahhing with a backing acoustic guitar and all.
Bic Runga - Sway
Lastly, we present a song that has been covered over and over since it was released in 1997. Most live outfits have this song in their repertoire; its a song that people will listen to on the side of their conversations and start to wonder as it sounds strangely familiar yet they can't put their finger on exactly what song it is. Fear not, for indieisthenewpop tells you that its from the land of a 1001 million sheep, New Zealand to be exact, and was featured on the American Pie OST.

Finley Quayle & William Orbit - Dice
First heard on the OC soundtrack, the intro is pretty mesmerizing and so is the hook. Put it down to top notch producing by William Orbit. nothing can compare... to when you roll the dice and come up with a hit like this.
The Hives - Tick Tick Boom
Now for a change of pace, this is a certified head-banger of a song. Now that's a pretty queer expression; is there some mysterious agency that actually goes around certifying songs as being "a hit/dud/whatever"? Not that it matters, as long as you listen to this song by the Swedish rockers.
Aqualung - Brighter Than Sunshine
Now this 'band' actually consists of one guy, something along the lines of Five for Fighting (both in music style and the one-man-band-ness). This song is a personal favourite of mine and was used in the film A Lot Like Love.
Acceptance - So Contagious
Much as we would like you to support all the musicians showcased here, it doesn't always work. Why? Could it be because everyone is too lazy to lift a finger other than the one that clicks the download link? Or might it be because people are too cheap to pay for good stuff? Tsk tsk. We wouldn't know, but no one will be blamed in this instance because the band in question has disbanded. Haha. The band members are now pursuing other projects though, find out more here. The song itself, is perfectly splendidly radio friendly and is as contagious as claimed.

ipod songs
The famous silhouette ipod commercials helped give many bands a jumpstart to the mainstream, the Black Eyed Peas, Jet etc. Now here are a few more that you might not have heard of yet.
CSS - Music Is My Hot Hot Sex
this song was first used on a fan-made commercial for the ipod touch. it became an overnight hit(the ad) and apple picked it up, commissioning the video maker to produce a professional version of the ad. It became an even bigger hit (the song), and the video for it is the #1 most viewed song on youtube. there's some controversy over whether the hits generated (101 million so far) have been due to actual viewers or some AI bots trawling the net, but who cares its a good song anyway.
Prototypes - Who's Gonna Sing
French band, 2006 ipod shuffle ad.
The Bird and The Bee - La la la
This jazz influenced electro-pop LA duo (now thats a mouthful) have a fresh sounding umm, sound, and you would have heard it too had their 2007 ipod touch ad been released.
Feature Cast - Channel Surfing
This funk-infused number sounds like it would fit well on the soundtrack for some sports game like an iteration of FIFA or Tony Hawk. This UK based DJ/Producer sure makes good beats to bounce and break too and has potential to be a good crossover act.
hot from the presses
since this blog has gone live, good music just seems to be dropping from the sky right onto my lap. I've never been one to hoard the good stuff, so please, kindly partake of my generosity and lend me your ears.
Carey Ott - Am I Just One
Think of a bank and what comes to mind? Burly security guards and balding managers perhaps, accompanied by bored looking tellers dispensing cash. Take a second look because one of those guys could be the next superstar. Carey Ott was, and probably still is, a bank teller who happens to make beautiful music on the side. This is acoustic soul at its finest - you'd think that the man is playing in your room and meaning every single word he sings.
Simon Lynge - Love Will Come Back To You
I first heard this song when it was the backing track to a particular risque scene in a silly movie which I shan't name. The movie may have been forgettable but this song certainly isn't. It positively brims with happiness. This is another singer with the gift to touch the heart with pure musical brilliance. Also, this is a true indie story of making it good on one's on strength and talent. Lynge was born in Denmark and made his way to LA in good old fashioned indie style, meeting the right people, going through the occasional hardship before getting his record out. He's one to watch for the future.
Hotel Lights - Let Me Be the One
Continuing this theme of feel-good touching songs, we have this track by Hotel Lights, a band fronted by ex-Ben-Folds-Five member Darren Jessee. Possibly the best song in today's lineup, I beseech you to listen and bask in auditory bliss. Do it. Now.

what the heck is indie
someone asked me: "why indie?" so here goes:
take a seat, because class is in session. here's indie 101 to school you on everything you need (or might not need) to know.
by right, independent music is a term used to describe genres, scenes, subcultures, styles and other cultural attributes in music, characterized by their independence from major commercial record labels and their autonomous, do-it-yourself approach to recording and publishing.
by left, indie is everything that you hear on the radio. why? for the simple fact that indie is the new pop, duh. half of the music you hear consists of mainstream acts trying to act indie to gain more street cred, 40% are obscure artists who shamelessly try to gain attention by self-proclaiming themselves indie, while a meagre 10% are actual bands on independent labels who actually fulfil the requirements to be 'indie'. of course, 100% of the acts are actually mass-commercial or aspire to reach that level. thus actually the whole lot are hypocrites for they just want to make alot of dough. for the purposes of brevity and to keep our heads from blowing up at the paradox of it all, we keep this out of mind for the time being.
why is indie the 'in' thing then? the old adage of "its hip to be square" holds true here.unless everyone is already square, which would necessitate one having to be round instead let's face it, its cool to be different. indie music culture, while having been around since forever, will always be considered to be sub-mainstream. so in a sense, its always different. in dollars and cents, its a money-spinner. *cha-ching*
indie music sounds different in the sense that its supposed to be rawer, with distinct instrumental sounds or rhythms. Stuff like sharp drum rolls and jarring guitar riffs, high-pitched almost-adolescent vocals, low-fi quality akin to recording in a garage or some other equally low-budget venue.
if you have been paying attention (stop sleeping in class dammit), you would have realised that many songs you hear nowadays incorporate some if not all of the above elements. Thus the distinction between indie and non-indie music has blurred. Pop music is turning indie and vice versa hence the reason for the existence of this blog.
alright class dismissed. shooooo

first band you have never heard of
indieisthenewpop is proud to present our first highlighted artist. The Perishers, hail from Sweden, have a distinct melancholic sound and most importantly, you probably haven't a clue who they are. Fear not, for your friendly neighbourhood indie blog is to the rescue with Weekends, a most brilliant track to celebrate the best part of the week. You may wish you had more than 48 hours in a weekend, well the bad news is that you can't, but the good news is, you now have this emoriffic song dedicated to all the Saturdays and Sundays out there.
some trivia for y'all: some of The Perishers' songs have been aired on episodes of the OC and one tree hill. whether you are a fan of those teen dramas or not, I'm sure the musical selection on those series are top-notch and here's another song, My Heart, perfect for a rainy day like today. Revealing songs like these leaves some regret as it is akin to showing one's secret place of solace/secrecy/whatever to the whole world, but for the greater good, for the acoustic enjoyment of everyone, hope you enjoy this five-star hit. Perhaps it will hit the charts like Hey There Delilah and be a long belated #1 hit.
